Das Thema meiner Masterarbeit lautete: „Bringing Objects to Life: Exploring how Objects are technically and visually Anthropomorphised in Western Animated Films“. Darin untersuchte ich, wie Objekte in westlichen Animationsfilmen technisch und visuell vermenschlicht werden.
Im praktischen Teil der Arbeit richtete sich der Fokus auf zoomorphisierte Objekte – also Gegenstände, die tierische Eigenschaften erhalten. Hierfür habe ich einen 3D-Stuhl animiert, als wäre er von verschiedenen Tieren besessen und untersucht, ob sich das jeweilige Tier allein anhand der Bewegung des Stuhls erkennen lässt.
Ich entschied mich für drei Tiere – Katze, Pferd und Frosch – da sie zwar allesamt Vierbeiner wie ein Stuhl sind, sich jedoch anatomisch stark unterscheiden und jeweils charakteristische Bewegungsformen besitzen. Für jedes Tier baute ich mithilfe von Advanced Skeleton ein individuelles Rig basierend auf demselben Stuhlmodell. Anschließend animierte ich in Maya für jedes „Stuhl-Tier“ einen Walk-Cycle, einen Sprung sowie eine kurze Szene mit einem Ball.
The topic of my master’s thesis was “Bringing Objects to Life: Exploring how Objects are technically and visually Anthropomorphised in Western Animated Films.” In it, I researched and analysed how objects are humanised in animation.
The practical part of the project focused on zoomorphised objects – everyday items that acquire animal-like qualities. For this, I animated a 3D chair as if it were possessed by different animals and explored whether the respective animal could be identified solely through the movement of the chair.
I chose three animals – a cat, a horse, and a frog – as they are all quadrupeds like a chair, yet differ anatomically and each display characteristic forms of locomotion. Using the same chair model, I created a customised rig for each animal with Advanced Skeleton. I then animated, in Maya, a walk cycle, a jump, and a short interaction with a ball for each “chair-animal”.
